PROJECT COVERAGE

The overall objective of this support project is to contribute to sustainable economic development and poverty reduction in the African continent by providing technical assistance to the development of the Investment Protocol of the African Continental Free Trade Area, thereby contributing to regional integration, fostering investment and the achievement of the Social Development Goals (SDGs).

Three-fold purposes: The Expert Group (EG), the Negotiating Forum (NF) and the Senior Trade Officials (STO) of the AfCFTA are supported in the negotiations of the Investment Protocol; Technical documents relevant to the negotiations of the Investment Protocol are prepared; The EG, NF and STO are trained in the key areas of the negotiations. 

Six-fold project outputs:

  • Negotiation meetings of the EG, NF and STO are appropriately supported;
  • EG meetings are attended by the TAT upon request;
  • Explanatory notes to the Investment Protocol prepared and presentations delivered;
  • Policy briefs on Investment and Sustainable Development, investment promotion and facilitation, investment protection and regulation, and investment dispute settlement mechanism prepared and presentations delivered;
  • Capacity building on key areas of the Investment Protocol to the members of the Expert Group on Investment and to the Negotiating Forum of the AfCFTA is provided;
  • Presentations and expert inputs on specific Articles and topics as may be required by the EG and the NF are provided and training and capacity building is provided.

RESULTS ACHIEVED

Purpose 1: The Expert Group (EG), the Negotiating Forum (NF) and the Senior Trade Officials (STO) of the AfCFTA are supported in the negotiations of the Investment Protocol

  • Negotiation meetings of the EG, NF and STO are appropriately supported by relevant expert input;
  • The meetings of the Expert Group are attended by the TAT upon request

Purpose 2: Technical documents that are relevant to the negotiations of the Investment Protocol are prepared

  • The explanatory notes to the Investment Protocol prepared;
  • Policy briefs on Investment and Sustainable Development, investment promotion and facilitation, investment protection and regulation, and investment dispute settlement mechanism prepared;
  • Presentations on the above subjects prepared and delivered.

Purpose 3: The EG, NF and STO are trained in the key areas

  • Capacity building on key areas of the Investment Protocol to the members of the EG on Investment and to the NF of the AfCFTA is provided;
  • Prepare and made presentations and provide expert input on specific articles and topics as may be required by the EG and the NF;
  • Provide training and capacity building on the key areas to the EG and NF and on specific topics as necessary to advance the negotiations
